Our Endless Numbered Days

My debut novel, Our Endless Numbered Days, is published in the UK by Fig Tree / Penguin, as well as in Canada, France, Israel, the US, Turkey, Italy, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Brazil, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Germany, and will be published in Spain and Russia, and in Catalan. It has recently been optioned for film.

It won the 2015 Desmond Elliott Prize for debut fiction and was a Richard & Judy Book Club pick for Spring 2016, and a Waterstones Book Club book. In 2015 it was selected by Powells as an indiespensible book.

Our Endless Numbered Days is the story of Peggy Hillcoat, who when she is eight in 1976, spends her summer camping with her father, playing her beloved record of The Railway Children and listening to her mother’s grand piano.

After a family crisis which Peggy doesn’t fully understand until later, her survivalist father James, takes her from London to a cabin in a remote European forest. There he tells her that the rest of the world has disappeared.

Peggy isn’t seen again for another nine years.

    • They are three different publishers and I think they each felt that their target readers would respond in a certain way to certain types of cover. As I understand it, the Canadians did consider using either the US or UK cover, but in the end decided to design their own. I haven’t yet seen the other countries’ covers, but I think they all usually design their own.

  11. I absolutely loved this book—and I mean it was the best book I’ve read in ages. It devoured me, instead of the other way round. I have an advance copy, of course, but I cannot wait to buy it and have it to read again and remind me of the experience of this first time through. It all feels so real still. I have to gather myself before I can coherently write my thoughts on it.

    PS. The Canadian cover (I’m Cdn) is my least favourite (seems a bit cliche to me), but they all suit the story.

I read a great review on Fleur In Her World’s blog which made me feel that I’m not actually too thick to read and enjoy your book – some of the blogs who’ve reviewed it have spent too much time trying to sound clever, whereas Fleur told us what it was all about. Love the premise – one of those simple, “why didn’t I think of that?” ones that result in the best books. Loved your explanation re different covers – something which has always intrigued me! Finally, I was going to wish you masses of luck with your novel, but you don’t need it – it’s going stratospheric, which is brilliant. So, all that’s left to say: Well bloody done!

  55. Just finished your book. Wow, wow, a well executed story. I feel so much for Peggy, and want to shake the adults out of their selfishness. What was Ute thinking, never passing on the gift of learning the piano?. And a very sinister and strange twist to the mystery behind Reuben. As a human you feel sad for a childhood lost, and Peggy never truly experiencing love. And right away you realise she never refers to Ute, as her mother, so from the get -go you understand this is a very distant relationship. Clever writing. I loved it, a real page turner. Thank you.

  57. Hello, I’ve just finished reading your novel and I feel absolutely bereft. I just loved it. Everything about it. The ending was so incredibly moving and upsetting and intriguing, all at once. I’m left inventing my own (happy) ending for Punzel, whom I’ve grown to really really care about – a difficult thing for a writer to do, so really, very well done Claire.

  58. I read this over the weekend and thought it was just stunning. As others have written here, I couldn’t put it down. The book will be one that stays with me for years to come.
