I’ve just come back from a book tour of New York organised by my US publisher, Tin House. I’ve been to America before, but never New York and I had an amazing time. So many lovely people, so many cool things, so many surprise and wonderful meetings.

I met my Tin House editor, Masie Cochran for Continue reading →

Doesn’t everyone love coming-of-age stories? A period we’ve all been through, one of great change and many firsts. First kiss, first love, first time we realise that everyone is fallible including ourselves. Here are nine coming-of-age novels that I’ve loved. Visit my website to find out what each of them are about and why I loved them: clairefuller.co.uk A fantastic event @turner_sims last night talking about music and writing, and Hunger and Thirst. It’s the most beautiful venue. We were treated to @henryaylingguitarist playing the piano music that he wrote for the audio book (the video is him practicing on the concert hall’s Steinway before the event), as well as two guitar & voice pieces. Thanks to the brilliant @writercaroleburns for the questions and to everyone who came. (And thanks @ali_shaw1 for the pictures.) This autumn the Hunger and Thirst book tour continues: The Colour of Milk by Nell Leyshon is narrated by Mary who has the most original voice. voice. She’s 14, it’s rural England in 1831 and she has only just learned to read and write. She’s a milkmaid until her father sends her to the vicarage to help the vicar’s wife who is ill. Mary is fierce, she says her mind, and she is writing an account of what happened to her. There were no surprises for me, but I did really enjoy this. Short, bleak, sad. It’s not Lonesome Dove, it’s different, but it’s as good. Filled with longing and loneliness but never sentimental, The Last Picture Show by Larry McMurtry has gone straight onto my books of the year. I’ve had lots of new followers recently. Thanks! So I thought it might be time for a Meet the Author post.👋 I read 80+ books a year: novels (mostly), short stories, non-fiction, and memoir. And recently a few people have asked me how I find the time. The answer is simple really: I prioritise reading, like you might for anything you love doing. But if you want to increase how often you read, which is not about reading faster, but just spending more time doing it, here are some of the things I do that might help: In December I’m teaching on an @arvon__ residential creative writing course called, Fiction: Reaching the End. It at The Hurst in Shropshire and there are only a few spaces left so grab them while you can. The Radiant Dark by @ali.oliva is a family drama told with a backdrop of the human race’s first, and ongoing, communication with aliens. It starts in 1980 and I really enjoyed how Oliva puts us in an alternative reality and has considered all the things that would change if we’d had messages from aliens.
