Inside the mausoleum we held our candles high.

‘Two wives?’ Cara said, her shadow moving between the three tombs.

‘One after the other,’ I said. ‘Not both at once.’ Continue reading →

Book tour for Hunger and Thirst is underway! It was great to visit so many gorgeous book shops for events and for signing stock this week. And wonderful to meet loads of readers and other writers, and get even get @gentle_human stamping flies in the books I signed. The final picture shows where I’ll be next (including one online event next week). If you’d like more info, comment with the location you’re interested in and I’ll DM you with the link. Hunger and Thirst will be published in Canada by @doubledayca on June 2, 2026. And just look at this cover! Thank you to the wonderful authors and outlets who have already commented on the book. An amazing sold-out launch for Hunger and Thirst last night. So many people coming to celebrate with me, eat cake and raise a glass. It was wonderful to hear some lovely words from my editor @helengw100 read by my amazing publicist @jane54321. Huge thanks to @winchester_books_festival for organising and to @margotgoodlife for being the best interviewer and a brilliant friend. Also big thanks to @amandaoosty, @sar1skatiger, @emmalathamwriter,, @kate.raines, @judith_heneghan for assisting with the competition and cake! Thanks to @ina_love_to_bake_and_make for the most delicious cake! Thanks to @pgwellsbookshop for handling sales so smoothly and efficiently. And finally to #librarianhusband for always be there and being so supportive and still enthusiastic for book six. My sixth novel, Hunger and Thirst is published in the UK today. As you can see from the video and the amount of sighing, I am a little apprehensive. Publishing a novel that has taken several years is always scary. But also exciting. All the stuff that has been in my head and made its way to a page, will be read, and then be in someone else’s head. How miraculous is that? Penance by @fancyeliza is a really interesting take on how we consume true crime, how teenagers can be influenced by it, and how those who tell it do not / cannot tell it without some bias, or (sometimes deliberate) misrepresentation. By us (me) reading this book - a novel, although it’s written as fact - how implicit am I in the ‘enjoyment’ of true crime? Where is the line between ‘enjoyment’ and acting out what you read? How much do tumblr and other social platforms that teenagers use contribute? It asks a lot of fascinating questions. Writers of London! I’m absolutely thrilled that Hunger and Thirst has been selected for the Book at Bedtime slot on @bbcradio4. It has been abridged by Sian Preece into 10 x fourteen minute episodes, which I’m so curious to hear. What did she leave in? What did she cut out? If anyone knows Sian please do put me in touch because I’d love to chat to her about it. London Falling by @praddenkeefe is going straight onto my books of the year. The UK edition of Hunger and Thirst is published a week today by @penguinfigtree. I can’t believe it’s come round so fast.
