In a recent post about my book tour of New York for the publication of my second novel, Swimming Lessons, I mentioned a ‘secret writing thingy’, and said that all would be revealed in March. And now I’m allowed to reveal what it was…
I was invited by ACE Hotel New York and my US publisher, Tin House to be their ‘Dear Reader’ writer in residence for one night. Each month a writer stays for a night at the hotel and writes a letter to all the guests. The writer then chooses which night the following month they would like their letter to be left in all 300 rooms, and is interviewed by The ACE Hotel.
I’m not allowed to reproduce my letter which was about losing and finding things in New York, because in a very lovely way, the hotel regards each letter as a piece of artwork between the writer and the guest, and individually numbers each one. But they were placed ‘bedside’ on 3rd March.
You can read the interview about my writing here.
ACE Hotel New York was an amazing place to stay (and in fact I stayed there for my whole time in the US).
My second novel, Swimming Lessons, is published in the UK, Canada, and the USA, and Germany. Click on the country links to buy.
The ACE hotel is ace in itself but this project… Wow. How wonderful.

It’s such a great hotel, with lots of support for the arts both literature and music

Fantastic idea! –Say, I am wondering if you will be coming to Powell’s in Portland to read on a book tour?
